Family:  Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfishes or rockfishes), subfamily: Scorpaeninae
Max. size:  11 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 1 - 73 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Florida (USA), Bahamas, and Yucatan (Mexico) to CuraƧao and probably northern South America.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-9; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 5-5. No occipital pit; two spines on part of preorbital overlapping maxillary; no supplemental preopercular spine; mushroom-like tabs on upper part of cornea present (Ref. 13608).
Biology:  Inhabits primarily offshore islands and infrequently caught in continental waters (Ref. 5521). Also found in clear water over sand and turtle grass; less common around coral reefs (Ref. 26938).
