Family:  Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfishes or rockfishes), subfamily: Scorpaeninae
Max. size:  23 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 36 - 118 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Florida and northern Gulf of Mexico in USA to Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 11-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 5-5. Occipital pit present; adults with three to four spines on part of preorbital overlapping maxillary; supplemental preopercular spine present; no dark spots on inner basal part of pectoral fin; generally pale in color with some dark pigments (Ref. 13608).
Biology:  Inhabits offshore waters.
