Environment:  demersal; freshwater,
Distribution:  Africa: upper Lualaba (Ref. 2970), Lake Mweru and Luapula River (Ref. 45616) up to Lake Bangweulu and the Chambezi River (Ref. 82485), in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.
Diagnosis:  Description: less deep-bodied than most congeners; snout more pointed; frontal profile straight; caudal fin slightly rounded (Ref. 52307). Coloration: body brownish; depending on behavioral situation, 9 diffuse dusky vertical bars may be visible on body; many dark maculae in dorsal and caudal fins; dorsal fin margin yellow; anal fin with some whitish and reddish dots and dark maculae; pelvic fins more dusky (Ref. 52307).
Biology:  Feeds primarily upon snails, but also takes other invertebrates and small fish; ovophilic, agamous, maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 52307). Used for snail and bilharzia control (Ref. 4537).
