Chasmocranus brevior Eigenmann, 1912

Family:  Heptapteridae (Three-barbeled catfishes)
Max. size:  7.9 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: Mana and Marowijne/Maroni river basins, and Potaro River.
Diagnosis:
Biology:  Rather rare (7 to 8 specimens known) maybe due to the very specialized biotope in which Heptapterus longior might be present. It is therefore poorly identified, also considering that the original description, rather poor, identifies it only in comparison with H. longior starting from the size of the adipose fin and the more pointed caudal fin (Ref. 35381).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 23 November 2020 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
